The farm: the real heart of Le Poggiola
Le Pòggiola is just over twenty hectares.
The land is predominantly marley soil making it particularly favourable for the growing of the grapevine, which in conjuction with the olive trees, constitutes the increasing and almost exclusive production of the Farm.
Our vineyards (about 5 hectares) are split into one third white grape (Trebbiano and Malvasia) and two thirds red grape (Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino).
We planted the vineyards in 1976 and expanded in 2001.
The cultivation of the olive tree is spread over about 10 hectares, consisting of 2000 trees, not all of which are in production, due to planting, aging and maturity.
We also have two hectares of land where we grow healing herbs and about 4 hectares of natural woodland.
For the production of our wine and olive oil we follow strict ORGANIC agricultural guidelines.
Fortunately we do not have great problems that require us to intervene with pesticides in the vineyards nor in the olive groves.
Regarding the land cultivation we apply the ‘non-cultivation’, that is we don’t intervene on the top layers of soil by ploughing or milling but only repeatedly mowing the grass under the olives and in the vineyard.
This not only allows you to take a stroll anywhere on our land, but it favours natural life in the soil, it limits erosion, and makes water absorbtion easier. We provide a natural fertilizer with the mulching of cut grass.
We maintain as much as possible all the spontaneous plants that grow on the edges of the plots and the bushes that form naturally on the verges to give room to spontaneous flora and fauna which also find shelter in the three farm’s woods.
We own some beehives which, in Spring, give us a scented acacia honey and subsequently a delicious chestnut honey.
Obviously, as in most respectable country homes, we have an aromary of aromatic herbs for our traditional and delicious cuisine.
We have an artificial lake on the hill from which we draw water to irrigate our fields which stay green even in the summer.
